Faragho, Gábor (1890–1953)

Army officer and politician. Faragho studied at the Ludovika military academy in Budapest and served in the Great War. He held various staff posts with artillery units in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1938, he moved to the Defence Ministry. He served from July 1, 1940 to June 23, 1941 as military attaché in Moscow, with the rank of general. On his return, he headed the Presiding Committee of the Defence Ministry, and then became superintendent of the Gendarmerie. His command of Russian, local knowledge and personal loyalty to the governor led Horthy to appoint him to head the delegation to Moscow to negotiate an › armistice, for which he was promoted to the rank of colonel general. On December 22, 1944, he was appointed minister of public supplies by the Provisional National Assembly. However, he resigned on June 21, 1945 and withdrew from public life to farm the land he had received in recognition of his part in the resistance.
