Hidas, István (b. 1918)

Communist politician. An iron turner by trade, Hidas became a party functionary in 1945 and secretary of the Budapest Party Committee in 1950–52. He became a member of the Political Committee and Central Committee Secretariat of the Hungarian Communist Party (MKP) in 1951, a deputy prime minister in 1952–3, minister of heavy industry in July 1953, minister of chemicals and energy in 1954, and again a deputy premier in October 1954. He was dismissed from his posts on October 23–4, 1956. In June 1957, he became a divisional head in the Ministry of Foundries and the Engineering Industry.
