Ordass, Lajos (1901–1978)
Evangelical churchman. Elected bishop of the Bányai diocese of the Evangelical (Lutheran) Church, Ordass defended the church’s independence of the communist authorities and opposed the nationalization of schools. He was placed under house arrest in August 1948, and in September, arrested on fabricated charges and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. He was freed in 1950, but deprived of his episcopal office. He was rehabilitated in 1956. In 1958, he was again removed from his bishopric and then retired from public life.
