László Eörsi

Resumé

Born in Budapest in 1955, he completed his teacher training in 1991 in Szombathely and began to work at the 1956 Institute in the same year.

His first publication had already appeared in the weekly Élet és Irodalom in November 1988, where he had debated with Sándor Geréb, a former state security officer, about who had shot into the crowd in Budapest’s Kossuth tér on October 25, 1956: the ‘counter-revolutionaries’, the Hungarian ÁVH or the Soviets. Further articles appeared, for instance on Bloody Thursday in the monthly Századvég. He also edited, chose documents, added notes to and indexed the confession of István Angyal, while still teaching full time

More favourable conditions for research came about in 1991, when the history of the Budapest uprising became his main field. His numerous publications on this subject include two volumes: Tűzoltó utca 1956 (1993) and Ferencváros 1956 (1997). A third volume is in preparation (Corvinites 1956). He also wrote two studies on the resistance in 1956–7: ‘The Vienna Hungarian Revolutionary Council’ in the 1994 Yearbook of the 1956 Institute, and The ‘Bástya Group’ (Budapest, 1995). He normally writes the film reviews in the 1956 Institute Yearbook; about 15 have appeared. He also writes regularly for the press, usually on anniversaries. He has lectured on the aspects of 1956 in Debrecen (in 1993 and 1997), at the Institute of Military History (in 1996) and in the Budapest Kossuth Club (in 2000). He has appeared on television several times, notably in a 1993 skirmish with Mihály Berki, a retired general.
